The Lower Middle School is a bridge between the Lower School and Middle School made up of 5th and 6th grade. Below is a short synopsis of the curriculum. A more comprehensive description of the curriculum is available in the Principal's office.
Reading - fifth/sixth grade
This course is designed to encourage reading not only functionally and developmentally but also for pleasure. While the class focuses on skills and strategies through novel based instruction, a variety of teaching materials are used to emphasize reading comprehension, vocabulary, context clues, understanding, sequencing, and other reading skills. An opportunity to apply these skills to outside reading materials is offered through the use of library books, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and travel brochures.
English-fifth/sixth grade
Sixth grade English introduces students to the basic structure of the English language through the study of grammar, its usage, and its mechanics, forming the basic foundation for the more intense study found in the higher grade levels. Students are required to identify word structures and patterns through several approaches in spelling and vocabulary. An emphasis is placed on writing with students exploring different genres, improving editing skills (both peer and self), and publication of their writing.
Mathematics-fifth/sixth grade
Mathematics in fifth and sixth grades is a course, which builds mathematical understanding, develops problem-solving skills, and works toward computational competence.
Science-fifth/sixth grade
Each science course begins with a review of the scientific processing skills, the scientific method, SI units of measurement, and graphing. An emphasis is placed on identifying variables, both independent and dependent. Labs, hands-on activities, the integration of technology, and critical thinking skills are important components to the mastery of the content.
Life science-sixth grade
This course is designed to introduce the students to biology. Emphasis is placed on the kingdom and phylum systems of classification, cell structure, genetics, and ecology. Practical application of subject matter is achieved through Socratic discussions, topical debates, engaging experiments, and a weeklong field study in the Florida Keys.
World history-sixth grade
