The pre-kindergarten 3 year olds through the 5th grade comprise the Lower School. Below is a thumb nail sketch of the curriculum. A more comprehensive description of the curriculum is available in the Principal's office.
Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten Our current curriculum is sound and is in accordance with the philosophy and mission of Hendricks Day School. The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten programs serve students through multiple teaching strategies in a loving and caring environment. The curriculum emphasizes a strong language arts program. It is heavily phonics based and introduces various skills at the appropriate time. The programs include reading readiness, oral language, listening, handwriting, and creative writing.
The math program enables the student to utilize a variety of manipulatives moving from the concrete to the abstract, giving the students a sense of math in their environment.
Social studies and science are taught through teacher generated thematic units, which encourage discussion and group participation. The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten integrated curriculum utilizes the skills of each of our resource teachers to complement the subject matter. The cumulative knowledge of our team approach helps to create a well-rounded education.
The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten curriculum allows us to hold many special events throughout the year. The thematic units that are covered allow us to take trips to the moon, become circus performers, play in the snow, and sail a boat. On many occasions we invite the parents to participate in the celebration such as kite day and Thanksgiving.
1st-5th Grade Hendricks Day School provides a quality academic education in an atmosphere of care and concern. A strong emphasis is placed in the core curriculum areas of math, English, reading, science, and social studies. The development of study skills, writing skills, spelling, vocabulary and reading comprehension are all integral parts of the language arts program. Our mathematics program builds from the concrete to abstract through the use of manipulatives and real world application. A firm foundation in art, music, foreign language, technology, physical education, and community service provide for a well-rounded education. In addition to developing intellectual growth in each student, we strive to help each student grow in areas of personal growth through character education.
