7th Grade Earth Science
Class Overview

The 7th grade science experience is an exploration of planet Earth and the regions of space. With a primary focus on the areas of geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy, students will experience first hand the powerful forces and human impact that shapes the planet on which we live. Of course, since it is our school’s philosophy, students will also have plenty of opportunities to practice their thinking skills and Habits of Mind.
Labs: This year, we plan to compare different types of volcanic eruptions and other earth shaking experiences. We’ll explore the deepest, coldest parts of the ocean floor aboard the world’s most advanced deep sea submersibles. We’ll view and maybe even climb aboard the ship that Dr, Robert Ballard charted when he discovered the remains of the Titanic. By the way, Science Lab is not a spectator sport! Your participation and effort contribute to 50% of your overall grade.
Homework: What homework? Use your class time wisely, and science homework should be virtually nonexistent. If homework is assigned, it will most likely involve gathering data or materials needed for labs.
Assessments: These aren't your ordinary tests. Chances are you won’t even need to study for them. Earth Science assessments usually involve project related activities and practical application. Building composting containers and mosaic art using found materials, and planting exerscaped gardens are just a few you can look forward to. Assessments make up the other 50% of your overall score.
