"There has been a calculated risk in every stage of American development - the pioneers who were not afraid of the wilderness, businessmen who were not afraid of failure, dreamers who were not afraid of action."
Brooks Atkinson |
Responsible risks are educated, calculated, and considered. The chance for success is carefully measured against the cost of failure.
People who have learned to take responsible risks often are already implementing other Habits of Mind as they make their assessments. They will use past knowledge, manage impulsivity, think flexibly, question, persist, be creative, and think interdependently.
Our students at Hendricks Day School are encouraged not to be afraid of new situations, but to accept each one as another learning experience. The skills they use to resolve uncertainties through risk-taking will be prove to be useful in all aspects of their lives in the future. |
