"I like to listen. I have learned a great deal from listening carefully. Most people never listen."
Ernest Hemingway |
Listening with understanding and empathy is to listen actively. The listener not only hears what is being said, but also receives the nonverbal messages being transmitted. This kind of listening is an intelligent behavior that lets the listener gain a deep understanding of what is being said.
Children who learn to listen with understanding and empathy will learn that listening is not meant to be a preparation for speaking. Rather than considering to say, one should listen fully and actively before deciding what, if any, response should be made.
Students are given many opportunities to practice and develop good listening skills at Hendricks Day School. We impress on them the importance of full understanding of others' points of view, and listening with understanding and empathy is a habit that will enable them to meet this expectation.
