Managing Impulsivity

"I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is the victory over self."

Aristotle

To manage impulsivity is to stop and think before acting.  The ability to avoid making quick decisions and snap judgments is shared by successful people in every field.

Children who learn to manage impulsivity will learn to define a goal and make a plan for reaching it.  They will look for other options, consider more possibilities, and examine likely outcomes before acting.

Managing impulsivity can become a habit through teaching and practice.  Hendricks Day School emphasizes "wait time" or "think time" in the classroom to encourage students to consider and evaluate what they would say and do.  The best decision is not necessarily the first or the fastest.
